REPAIR & SAFETY

When a tire cannot be repaired

How the puncture location and tire condition affect repairability, including damage from driving flat.

A small-looking puncture can still lead to a replacement decision. A technician has to evaluate the whole tire, not just the point where air escapes.

Location matters

Passenger and light-truck puncture-repair guidance limits repairs to the specified tread area. Shoulder and sidewall damage fall outside it. Repairing a flexible or structurally damaged area is not equivalent to repairing an eligible tread puncture.

The visible hole is only part of the story

A tire may have damage from running flat, impacts, deterioration, excessive wear, or an earlier unsuitable repair. An internal inspection can uncover a problem that a photo of the outside cannot establish.

Ask for the reason

If replacement is recommended, ask what made the tire unsuitable. Was it the injury location, internal damage, wear, a prior repair, or a manufacturer restriction? A clear explanation makes the decision easier to understand.

What to do next

We can discuss new and used replacements appropriate for your vehicle. Include the other tires’ condition and whether the vehicle has AWD, staggered sizes, or special requirements. Read Flat repair done right for our inspection and repair approach.
